The gulls laughed at us as we arrived at the dive site. We had decided to do a beach dive to see how many of the big jewels we could find. Suiting up I again watched the gulls diving into the bait fish than laughing as they soared into the sky. I was hoping they were not making a comment on our hunt.
We were at Cortez Beach for the opening of STONE CRAB season. Every October 15th we get out the butter and lemon slices, find our CLAW measures ,fill our tanks and head out to our favorite hidden rock piles to collect crab claws. Dive flag dragging behind us we come across our first monster. The claw itself is the size of my fist. A KEEPER. Carefully placing the point of opposite claw into the elbow of the one I want I watch in amazement as the crab releases the claw I want into my hand. No trauma, No flesh damage, placing mister crab back into his hole we move further to find another. Each find must be measured to assure that the claws we take are at least 2 %”… The nice thing about the harvest of STONE CRAB CLAWS is that you don’t kill the crab. He gets to grow bigger and present you with a bigger claw the next year.
When you are in an area that is full of “stonnies” it doesn’t take long to get the 1-gallon of claws that you are allowed. Even though the laws have changed, we still only take one claw, not only to reduce the stress on the crab but also to allow the smaller one to grow.
STONE CRAB SEASON RUNS FROM OCTOBER 15 THRU MAY 15™.
CLAWS SIZE MINIMUM IS 2 3/4″
1 GALLON OF CLAWS PER PERSON OR 2 GALLONS PER VESSEL, WHICHEVER IS LESS
These are the rules and regulation from the Florida fish and Game Comm. As a fellow gather I must say that if you take any claw smaller and are caught, EACH claw is a $250.00 fine and it may be worse if the officer decides you are breaking more than size rules.
HOPE TO SEE YOU ON THE REEF AND HAPPY CLAWING
